FAQs

What causes a carpet to deteriorate?

It’s normal for a carpet to fray or dull after many years of use. However, this should only occur after about 7 to 10 years of use — not 1 or 2 years. If your carpet starts to deteriorate within just a few years, one likely cause is the repeated force and pressure of people and objects. This can happen if you purchase the wrong type of carpet for a high-traffic area. Plush pile carpet, for example, isn’t well suited to rooms with high foot traffic.

Carpet infestation is another concern that can cause a carpet to deteriorate. Pests like carpet moths and beetles can quickly eat through wool and man-made carpet fibres. Naturally, this can result in your carpet looking odd and patchy. You can kill these pests by calling an exterminator or routinely cleaning and vacuuming your carpet and using the proper repellents.

How do I keep my carpet in good condition?

Keeping your carpet in good condition actually starts with the installation. By hiring a professional service, you can avoid common carpet installation problems that can cause long-term issues. From there, it’s up to you to vacuum regularly, clean up spills immediately, and avoid tracking dirt into the house.

Another key way to keep your carpet in good condition is to schedule professional deep cleanings at least once or twice a year. This type of cleaning can get below the carpet fibres to remove things invisible to the eye, like allergens and dust mites.

How do I stop my carpet from being worn?

One of the most common carpet problems is damage from foot traffic. You can prevent your carpet from wearing out too quickly by installing the right carpet type for each respective room.

If you want a soft carpet for your bedroom or a place with low foot traffic, plush pile carpet is a great choice. If you’re purchasing carpeting for your living room — an area that’s going to have some of the highest foot traffic in your home — you should opt for something more durable like a twist or loop pile carpet.

What will ruin a carpet?

There are plenty of ways to ruin your carpet instantly or over several months or years. Let’s explore the leading causes of carpet damage, why they’re so problematic, and how to avoid them.

  • Insufficient vacuuming — You should try and vacuum your carpets at least once a week. If not vacuumed regularly, dirt and small debris can build up on your carpet and cause it to deteriorate much faster.
  • Water damage — Water damage, whether it’s from leaks or frequent spills, can lead to mould growth. If mould takes hold of your carpet, you may need to replace it or hire a specialist to repair the damage. Thankfully, you can prevent mould growth by fixing leaks and drying spills right away.
  • Ignoring stains — So many things can stain your carpet, from pen ink to red wine. Spills are perfectly normal, but you need to respond to them quickly with some sort of cleaning solution. The longer you wait, the harder the stain will be to remove. Try to use natural solutions using ingredients like warm water and vinegar rather than chemical-laden products.
  • Ultraviolet light — Over time, ultraviolet light can cause your carpet’s fibres to break down and its colour to fade. You can block UV light from the sun by closing your drapes more on sunny days.
  • Chemical spills — One of the worst things that can happen to your carpet is a chemical spill. The chemicals in certain items, like paint, wood stain remover, and some cleaning products, could eat away at your carpet’s fibres. Before using any type of chemicals around your carpet, be sure to lay down a reliable drop cloth.
  • Pet accidents — Pets that are prone to having accidents indoors could cause your carpet to retain unfortunate stains and odours. You can prevent this by cleaning up accidents immediately and placing puppy pads where necessary. When cleaning up, try to dab up liquids rather than smearing them. The latter could make the situation even more troublesome.

How often should carpets be cleaned?

Ideally, you should vacuum your carpets twice a week in high foot traffic areas and once every week or so in light traffic areas. You should also clean spills as quickly as possible to prevent them from becoming stains.

Of course, there’s more to maintaining a carpet than vacuuming and dabbing up spills. Along with these regular chores, carpets should be deep cleaned once or twice a year. If you smoke or have kids or pets, you may want to get them professionally cleaned every quarter instead. All of these will help keep your carpets in great condition for many years to come.

How can I clean carpet stains?

As stated above, you should try to use natural products over chemical-laden products when cleaning carpet stains. For most stains, a mixture of 1/4 cup of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and water in a spray bottle will suffice. Simply spray the solution on the stain and let the mixture soak for at least 5 minutes. Then, blot the area clean with a dry towel.

You can also sprinkle some dry baking soda over the stain before using the spray solution. The vinegar in the bottle will then interact with the baking soda to help remove the stain. If you go this route, you can let the baking soda and vinegar spray mixture sit for a few hours. No matter which method you use, remember to always blot the stain and use a white cloth (so the pigment doesn’t bleed into your carpet).
